The actor, who made his name by appearing at the Royal Shakespeare Company, especially in substantial roles in the Histories – Richard II and Richard III – talks to Heather Neill about his greatest challenge to-date, playing Macbeth for Michael Boyd in a Reformation-era setting. Michael [Boyd] has chosen to cut a lot of the “double double toil and trouble”, “the eye of newt” and all of that – but if you strip it back what you have are supernatural beings coming and delivering a prophecy that then turns out to be true…
