The artistic director of the Lyric, Hammersmith, talks to Dominic Cavendish about his staging of the fiftieth anniversary production of Harold Pinter’s The Birthday Party, and about the play’s personal significance for its author.
I was beautifully aware of the irony of the fact that a play that had been deemed an utter failure is now a classic.
