INTERVIEW: PAULE CONSTABLE
Paule Constable is one of the most successful and influential lighting designers in the UK if not the world. She has shaped the look of contemporary theatre in the country through her work on stage – from War Horse to Les Misérables to Oliver to Wolf Hall to Angels In America – and also through her unwavering advocacy for lighting designers, for theatre, and for women in the profession. She has the rare ability to explain what lighting design does – and what it can and should do – in a way that makes complete sense of the art form. In this interview she talks about what led to her decision to retire in 2025, and what will come next.
Recorded on Zoom, 22nd October 2025
