INTERVIEW: KATHY CLUGSTON

The BBC Radio Four announcer and newsreader talks to Judi Herman about writing a musical with composer Desmond O’Connor. Called But First This, it is an affectionate homage to Radio Four, and it has found its ideal audience at the Watermill Theatre, Newbury. Recorded at New Broadcasting House, 5 November 2014.

I was aiming at a sense of the tradition of Radio Four and the seriousness of it, but at the same time a slightly surreal element because obviously my play is a comedy so it’s not based in any kind of fact, it’s a fictionalised world.
