INTERVIEW: RACHEL CHAVKIN. As Anais Mitchell’s contemporary folk opera Hadestown continues at the National Theatre ahead of its Broadway run, director Rachel Chavkin talks to Matt Trueman about the edges and limits of musical theatre. With her own company The TEAM, Chavkin increasingly builds music into dense, devised work like Mission Drift and Anything That Gives Off Light. She is in increasing demand as a director of off-beat, off-Broadway musicals since her success with the OBIE award-winning Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812. Recorded at the National Theatre on 13th September 2018.

“A big crime of a lot of mediocre musical theatre is that it just doesn’t take the music seriously enough”
