“People have as many experiences of going deaf as there are deaf people in the world. Some of them bear similarities to each other but in essence it’s a personal experience. I can say I don’t know what it’s like to go deaf but I do know what it’s like to be faced with something so frightening and sad-making that you feel like you’ve lost your sense of identity.”
