DIRECTOR’S TALK: MAX STAFFORD-CLARK

Out of Joint’s Artistic Director talks to Chris Campbell, the Royal Court’s Literary Manager, about his new book Journal of the Plague Year; part personal memoir, part “howl of rage” over Arts Council England’s round of funding cuts announced in March 2011. The conversation is prefaced by a reading from the book by actor Danny Webb and is followed by questions from the floor. Expletives undeleted. Recorded at the Royal Court, 17 January 2014.

A Conservative government will always minimise the importance of the theatre… The theatre is the most important medium of discussion and social debate in this country.
