INTERVIEW: KWAME KWEI-ARMAH. 20-minute excerpt from an interview with Dominic Cavendish conducted for the Daily Telegraph in which the playwright and director – currently artistic director of Center Stage, Baltimore, USA, discusses Kemp Powers’ drama about Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke and Jim Brown, One Night in Miami, which he has brought to the Donmar Warehouse after a successful run in the US. “As it stands, of the major theatres, I happen to be the only black artistic director… in America, period. I would frame it as – much as there are structural deficits in terms of women in theatre, there are structural deficits in terms of black people in theatre and in positions of power in theatre in America, and in Britain, absolutely.”
