Gregory Burke: how to follow a success

Interviewing someone who has no theatre background is refreshing. The most interesting issue addressed by Gregory Burke was what happens after you have had a smash hit.

His first visit to a theatre was when the Traverse agreed to stage Gagarin Way. It subsequently became the only winner so far of a First of the Firsts and has been a hit around the world. The lad from Rosyth must have imagined that this theate lark was as easy as boiling an egg.

He really suffered from “what next?” insecurity afer that unbelievable early success. His subsequent work did not get the same raves until he came up with Black Watch. That might well be the peak of any writer’s life, so the question arises once more. How do you top that?

Time will tell but surely another play of that stature iand scale is asking too much.

For the moment, let’s all enjoy this epic tale of a regiment, its men and the War in Iraq (that’s if tickets can be begged or bought).
